Lightbulb Staves or Offhand + +5ene Wpn? During the GvG

Well, to be honest I've always been curious about what's the better choice. Since the release of NF most monks started to use the combination of +5 ene wpn and offhand/shield. Using this configuration gives you firm 17 energy (12 from an offhand and 5 from a wpn) 60hp (30hp from a wpn and 30hp from an offhand) and basically 20% faster recharge on offhand's attrubute. Imho it's the best possible configuration, if you're beaten by something you simply change the offhand into a shield with appropriate inscription. BUT, recently I've seen some monks (like Teh Maverick from [Gr]) using a staff. What are the advantages? What are the inscriptions and mods used in it? Is it better/worse/equal to the wpn/offhand//shield combo?

+5 weapon and shield or offhand will always be better imo. Staffs are just good for that extra damage (but you can really just use a wand for it). Some staffs have energy+7<50, which can be helpful, but you can get that with a wand too. The only thing is that if you want the HSR over all attributes...

Tormented staffs have nice skins though, and PvP staffs are easier to make :P

So, people using staves in gvg just want to brag about how filthy rich they are so they can afford zodiac/celestial/tormented? :>

Same reason why people use celestial/zodiac/elemental swords. A spear is by far better in terms of effectiveness (since you can catch rof's, hit trappers, etc.) but it doesn't look as cool.

I use a 15>50 staff for l33t wanding. If i get attacked im always on shield anyway.

Don't take anything from Hella's Team, they are epic failure.

I'm curious.. why use a shield with the inscription for defense, if you're getting attacked, when you can still use an offhand with the same inscription? You don't get the extra armor from the shield if you aren't specced into that attribute (as in the 16, not the inscription), right? Unless it's your E-denial set, which is another story.. but yeah, why a shield instead of an offhand?

EDIT: ahaha, nevermind. Did some research, found you still get half the armor. Check. Unless this is also wrong, feel free to ignore my question.

If ur even gonna use a staff u should use it on ur monk or warrior for conjure dmg. Everything else is just pointless u could just use a wand.

So, summing up - using of a staff is pretty much useless, wpn + shield pwn all, did I get that right? Sooo it would be a better choice to invest in eg. zodaic sword + diamond aegis instead of paying 100k+ for a req 9 zodiac staff? :P

Staff is the better choice if your not being attacked.

If you don't want to think about your weapon swaps, take a staff. They're the most rounded weapon you can take and ideal if you want to use one weapon for everything. But if you want to swap weapons and try to squeak a bit more performance out of your character, you won't use staves very often. A staff is really only good for the 40% fast cast if you're swapping often.

The only reason to take a staff would be to have a 36% HCT/ 20% HSR +30 health set(a set which atm you can only get in pve). Or ofcourse if your bad.

Thank you for all the answers. Personally, I use the wpn + offhand/shield but I've become obsessed with buying a zodiac staff ever since their prices lowered. I think I'd stay with the first configuration

Only noobs use pve characters in pvp, unless you're rich and can be bothered enough to buy a dozen of shields.

So that the 4 elemental shields, Slashing, blunt, piercing, 20% crippled (for flagging on Burning), and maybe a -5(20%) if your lazy... i count 9 not dozens.

(plus the mandatory black dye for each, and for your l33t armor) Yeah i was rich

So true, people get the wrong impression of pve chars in pvp nowadays. Armors are extremely cheap now - you can buy tyrian armor for your female monk (which is imho beautiful) for about 8k. Sup vigor rune is ~10k so you can get below 20k. Offhands = greens. +5e wpn = can be common skin so even 2k (+ 30hp which is 8-15k). The only thing that can be expensive are shields. But I think I could manage to equip my char with full pvp inventory for something like ~200k :F

The second part of my post is probably more important: Cant be bothered. And there's reward points now anyway, so really... who uses pve chars?

Staves are good for two things: casting aegis while in an enchanting set and hoping for the bonus, and using the universal 20% recharge for non attributed spells such as holy veil. Everything else is better with wand/offhand or sword/offhand set up.

and yes, I said sword. Spears are ugly.
